Antique PEARL Mini-Washboard – Family Item from the 1920s
Description
A piece of Canadian manufacturing history, this PEARL washboard made by Canadian Woodenware Co. has a ridged glass wash board encased in wood frame, and letter pressed with name and manufacturer information.
This treasured piece is in great condition, with wear commensurate with age. The glass panel is intact, the logo is clear, notched wood and original round head nails are secure. This antique has its solid wood frame, backing nails (image 2) and the distinctive ribbed glass (images 3 and 5). There are very few noticeable chips / cracks. Features an original stamped "PEARL" brand logo and information on the top wooden header.
Perhaps this authentic mini-washboard from PEARL was a wedding shower gift to my grandmother in the 1920s! I have Mom’s 1955 wedding shower gift - wash-board - displayed in my laundry room.
It measures 17”H x 8½”W x 2¼”D and was actually used to scrub clothing. (image 8 – not my grandmother, but you get the idea)
How to tell if it’s an authentic antique washboard:
* Text below PEARL MANUFACTURED BY ‘THE’ CANADIAN WOODENWARD CO logo is from the early 1920s.
* Early 20th century stamped the manufacturing historical outposts (WINNIPEG ST. THOMAS MONTREAL)
* Straight block lettering (as opposed to arched or stylized logos) points to production layout early-1920s.
* The Canadian Woodenware Co. used a traditional letterpress printing machine to stamp the 1” PEARL name (and locations) on the top wooden header
* Traditional dovetail joining / "slot" top construction (images 6 and 7) circa 1922.
* The glass has a subtle green tint due to natural iron impurities in early glass production (this is early 1920s) Clear glass found 1930s onward.
* Deep, thick glass panel with distinct ridges = circa 1922. (meant to survive heavy manual scrubbing without cracking)
* Frame is held together with round head nails that naturally darkened over 90 years.
* The wood's patina: some visible water stains, slight graying of the wood grain.
This PEARL mini-washboard reflects a time when everyday objects were built to last.
A distinctive decorative piece that brings warmth, history, and rustic charm to any space. (image 9 very creative) With its compact size it is unique décor for a laundry room, farmhouse kitchen, cottage, or vintage-inspired interior.
