Poodles are intelligent, expressive, wonderfully individual dogs—and their beautiful curly coats are one of the things that make them so recognizable.

They're also a breed for whom grooming isn't optional coat maintenance. It's part of lifelong care.

Whether you choose a short, practical trim or prefer to keep your poodle fluffier, regular professional grooming and good maintenance at home work together to keep that coat comfortable and manageable.

And here's something new poodle families may not know:

Brushing the coat and thoroughly checking it with a comb aren't quite the same thing.

A brush can sometimes move nicely across the outer portion of a curly coat while small tangles remain closer to the skin. Those tangles can gradually tighten and join together, eventually becoming mats.

A comb is a wonderfully simple way to check your work. If it can move gently through the coat from near the skin to the ends, you're much more likely to know what's actually happening underneath all that beautiful fluff.

Particular attention may be needed anywhere friction encourages tangles—such as where a collar or harness sits, around the legs and feet, behind the ears and in other high-friction areas.

And for puppies?

Don't wait until your poodle desperately needs a haircut before introducing grooming. A puppy's earliest visits can help make grooming sights, sounds and sensations familiar: having feet and legs handled, a face gently held, hearing clippers and dryers, standing on a grooming table and discovering that grooming is simply another safe part of life.
