Bringing Home a Yorkie? Let's Talk About That Beautiful Coat

Description
One of the loveliest things about a Yorkshire Terrier is that gorgeous, silky coat.

It's also something new Yorkie families may not realize requires an ongoing commitment.

Yorkies can be kept in many different styles—from the beautiful long, flowing coat they're famous for to a much shorter, practical trim that's easier to maintain at home.

There isn't one “right” choice.

The best coat length is one that keeps your Yorkie comfortable and that you can realistically care for between grooming appointments.

If you love a longer coat, regular brushing and combing will be important to prevent tangles from becoming mats, particularly in areas where there's friction. A shorter trim can greatly reduce the amount of maintenance needed at home while still leaving your little dog looking unmistakably—and adorably—like a Yorkie. ❤️

And if you're bringing home a Yorkie puppy, you don't have to wait until that first haircut is urgently needed to introduce grooming. Gentle early experiences with having the face, feet, ears and body handled can help grooming become a familiar part of life rather than something suddenly introduced when there's already a problem to solve.

Already have an adult Yorkie—or welcoming a rescued or rehomed one? That's okay too. We begin with the dog in front of us and go gently from there.

At Gentle Touch Grooming, I offer quiet, one-to-one grooming from my Kingston home for small and medium-sized dogs up to approximately 55 lbs.

There are no rows of waiting dogs and no busy salon atmosphere. Your dog receives my individual attention, patient handling and a grooming experience shaped around who they are.

Shy, nervous and senior dogs are very welcome.
