My name is Abe, I'm a senior resident Doctor in Ontario. I'm in the process of bringing on a few students to mentor through OMSAS medical school applications review (ABS Essays).

First of all congratulations on getting this far into your application process to begin to apply to medical school. You are only a few steps away from hopefully getting admitted into your school of choice.

OMSAS Applications (ABS Essays):

Medical schools have very particular criteria and face a high volume of applications, often 5,000 or more for just 100-150 spots. To make a memorable impression, it's critical to present your unique qualities and experiences effectively, even within just the 150 characters or a 250 word essay. I have had many talented students miss out on numerous application cycles because they struggle to market themselves well. What people often forget, is that with thousands of applications and with many people looking through essays and ABS entries, certain strict criteria are in place to help graders select their applicants. It's important to highlight the traits that would make you an excellent physician on this application. This is not a regular CV, and these are not regular essays.

Different schools also emphasize certain mission statements and look for certain personas, so it's important to tailor each essay to the different schools and use the right buzz words.

I have been reviewing applications for almost 10 years now, and have worked with many many students, many of them currently practicing physicians. My experience extends from in province Ontario medical school applications, to out of province, and US schools.
