The author combines archival research with interviews from longtime residents, documenting the coal mining industry, immigration, businesses, community organizations, and everyday life.

This history is only possible through the cooperation of many citizens of Sydney Mines, who like me, were anxious to expand the record of events; especially, that from the 1850s exposing the industrial might of their little town. Such events describe the character of our ancestors and what they regarded as valuable and important. Thanks to those who were interviewed and so willingly contributed facts from memory. Also, thanks to Ann Mac Dougall for her valuable editing assistance. The contents cut a wide swath through the town's activities. Sydney Mines was a dynamo of activity when one considers the industry, immigration and commercial impact over the years.
