Description
This is a full-time position within the carpentry division of the Maintenance Department working with a dedicated team to maintain, install and service a wide variety of buildings and infrastructures across The Butchart Gardens property. Under the direction of the carpentry supervisor, this position works alongside our other departments to support their unique needs and systems. Although shifts are primarily Monday through Friday, occasional evenings, weekends, overtime and on-call work will be required. The successful candidate would be able to work both indoors and outdoors, in inclement weather in all seasons.

Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the direction of the carpentry supervisor:
• Perform carpentry related maintenance work to buildings and structures to the high level of appearance and usability required by The Butchart Gardens.
• Participate in the construction of new buildings and structures.
• Maintain building exteriors including gutter cleaning, moss removal etc.
• Participate in the production of custom cabinetry and millwork.
• Assist other trades with Maintenance Department related tasks as needed.
• Assist other departments from time to time with non-carpentry-related tasks as required to ensure the smooth operation of The Gardens.
• Carry out these duties within tight timelines and often under pressure to minimize disruption to visitors.

Requirements
• Valid Red Seal TQ in carpentry.
• At least 5 years as a journeyperson, well-rounded in all phases and types of construction.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to analytically problem solve, prioritize, multitask and work independently.
• Experience with construction tools and equipment, their use and application.
• Experience with production and installation of custom cabinetry and millwork would be an asset.
• Experience with woodshop tools and equipment would be an asset.
• Competency in reading construction drawings and specifications.
• Working knowledge of the current B.C. Building Code and other applicable codes, regulations and standards.
• Familiarity with and adherence to WHMIS and Work Safe BC Regulations.
• Must be safety conscious and willing to work in a team atmosphere.
• Valid B.C. Driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
• Must be capable of physically demanding work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather (a physical assessment is required).
• Must supply own hand tools.

This is a full-time, year-round position with a 6-month probationary period. Shifts will primarily be scheduled Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm with occasional overtime, evening and weekend work required. This position is also contingent upon successful completion of a physical assessment and clear driver’s abstract. We offer competitive wages and renumeration up to $40.50 per hour, dependent on experience and qualifications of the candidate. The position will include 3 weeks of paid vacation, (plus an additional 2 weeks paid staff holidays during The Gardens closure each year), health and dental benefits, Health Care Spending Account, and matching RRSP plus 1% upon completion of a successful 6-month probationary period.
