A restaurant (or food) runner is the crucial link between the kitchen and the dining room. Their primary duty is to rapidly deliver prepared meals from the kitchen to guests' tables, ensuring orders are accurate, visually appealing, and served at the correct temperature while assisting servers and bussing staff.
Core Responsibilities
Order Delivery: Transport food and drinks from the kitchen or bar to guests quickly to optimize service speed and food quality.
Order Accuracy: Check outgoing dishes against ticket orders to ensure correct table placement, portion sizes, and adherence to special dietary requests or allergies.
Liaison Duties: Act as the primary communication bridge between front-of-house (waitstaff, hosts) and back-of-house (chefs, expeditors) to relay order priorities or customer feedback.
Station Support: Help waitstaff and bussers refill beverages, set tables before service, clear dirty dishes, and restock service stations with napkins, silverware, and glassware.
Customer Service: Briefly interact with guests by answering basic menu questions or addressing immediate requests (e.g., bringing extra condiments).
Key Requirements
Physical Stamina: Ability to stand and walk for long shifts, frequently carrying heavy, large trays of food and dishware.
Multitasking & Organization: Capacity to manage multiple tables, memorize seating charts, and prioritize urgent tickets in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal skills to coordinate with kitchen staff and clearly announce dishes to customers.
Availability: Flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as these are peak restaurant operating times.
