About Us
Patterson Mechanical Ltd is a locally trusted HVAC contractor serving the Interlake and Winnipeg region. We specialize in keeping homes and businesses comfortable through -40°C winters and humid summer heat. We are expanding into cold-climate heat pump installations and need a versatile technician who can handle furnaces, central AC, and modern heat pump systems.

The Role
We are looking for a fully licensed technician proficient in furnace (gas/propane/Electric) installation and service, air conditioning (central & ductless), and heat pumps including air-to-air and cold-climate models. You will perform residential and light commercial installs, diagnostics, and maintenance while following Manitoba Hydro and local code requirements.

Key Responsibilities
- Furnace & AC Installation/Service: Install, repair, and maintain gas furnaces, central air conditioners, evaporator coils, line sets, and duct work.
- Heat Pump Installation & Service: Install cold-climate air-source heat pumps (e.g., with inverter compressors, auxiliary heat strips or gas backup). Perform refrigerant charge adjustments, defrost cycle checks, and low-ambient operation validation.
- System Integration: Configure dual-fuel systems (heat pump gas furnace) with appropriate thermostats/controllers.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and control issues on all three system types using manifold gauges, multi-meters, combustion analyzers, and heat pump specific tools.
- Customer Education: Explain efficiency benefits, set-back temperatures, defrost operation, and emergency heat settings – especially for heat pump owners in Manitoba winters.
- Safety & Compliance: Follow Manitoba Building Code, Natural Gas & Propane Installation Code (CSA B149.1), and Manitoba Hydro requirements. Perform CO testing, static pressure checks, and heat rise verification.

Required Qualifications
- Journeyman or Apprentice Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM) valid MB certification (or interprovincial Red Seal) and Sheet Metal Installation
- Valid Class B Gasfitter license (Manitoba) mandatory for furnace/gas line work.
- EPA 608 Certification (or equivalent CFESA/refrigerant handling card for Canada).
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with furnace AC service AND at least 1 heating season working on heat pumps (or documented training).
- Valid Manitoba driver’s licence with clean abstract.
- Ability to work in all conditions: attics in July ( 35°C) and rooftops in February (-35°C with wind chill).
- Own basic hand tools; company provides specialty tools and gauges.

Heat Pump Specific Knowledge Required
- Understanding of cold-climate heat pump operation down to -25°C to -30°C.
- Experience with inverter-driven compressors, electronic expansion valves (EEVs), and defrost control boards.
- Ability to size, install, and program dual-fuel systems (heat pump gas furnace backup).
Knowledge of Manitoba Hydro’s heat pump rebate program requirements (e.g., minimum HSPF, cold climate performance rating).

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
- NATE or HRAI heat pump certification.
- Ductless mini-split installation experience.
- Able to read and interpret electrical schematics and refrigerant circuit diagrams.

What We Offer – Interlake Based
- Competitive hourly wage based on ticket and experience.
- Overtime paid after 40 hours (often available during peak cold snaps).
- Extended health & dental benefits (including vision and prescription).
- 2 weeks’ vacation to start.
