Legal secondary basement suite ASAP (Aug 1- ?Oct., 2026)
Description
If this ad is still up, I am still looking for a legal secondary/non-apartment, city-approved, unfurnished, self-contained basement suite to occupy soon (>July 31 - Oct., 2026), for long-term but monthly-lease rental, hopefully near frequent bus or LRT service. I am a young-minded, university-educated, 73-year-old, quiet, single male, living on fixed income; no pets, non-smoker, non-drinker, general abstainer. I will entertain buying minimal renter's insurance but prefer none, signing a damage waiver if necessary, and of course will pay a damage deposit (hopefully reasonable). I would hope the suite does not have a history of flooding, mold, or pestilence.
I can be contacted directly at ksoehn@hotmail.com or a VOIP telephone number with a voicemail or message feature. Email is preferred and probably faster. Am flexible on some details/preferences.
At the end of July (may be extended), 2026, I finish occupying a 950 sq. ft., 1 bdrm legal basement suite (horizontal duplex) in Bonnie Doon, two blocks from bus routes on 91 St, for $1150/mth, with a separate entrance. I lived just under a year there, in a 1-year lease, but the owner is selling the house and moving to St. Albert, so I received formal written notice with one month to go on lease. I hope to find rental accommodation as close to this (location, price, condition, much greater duration) as possible, or better (my own heat control and a bath would be nice), for the same or better $/mth.
I can provide a reference from my past landlords, and proof of income. I am somewhat of a handyman, so I can keep things in good repair. Please do not contact me if you know your suite isn't legal in respect to fire and building code, and has not been validated with an approved permit by city inspectors. My rent subsidy depends on this accreditation so on this point I am inflexible, and I will check before renting: and you can check or list your legal address.

I will need to see, and be given or sent a copy or photo (physical copy or electronic file) of the approved permit.
Cheers, Ken Soehn.
