Part-time Martial Arts Instructor
Description
Aiki Canada Martial Arts is looking for a part-time martial arts instructor to help teach (kids, youth and adult) classes at their dojo in Oshawa, Ontario.
Instructor will need to teach physical self-defense techniques, command discipline, lead classes for various ages, ensuring student safety, assessing progress, and promoting personal growth like confidence and respect. Key duties involve curriculum planning, demonstrations, student supervision, feedback, and sometimes administrative tasks like promotions, adapting methods for different skill levels from beginner to elite.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum: Develop and teach lesson plans, demonstrate techniques (strikes, blocks, forms/katas, throws, joint locking, submissions, escapes etc.), and provide individual feedback, and correct form. Proper and safe execution of techniques.
Safety & Supervision: Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive atmosphere, monitor students closely, and manage sparring, grappling and randori sessions to prevent injury.
Student Development: Foster discipline, respect, focus, and confidence; provide individual coaching and feedback while leading by the Seven virtues of the Samurai (Bushi).
Instructor Development: Continue to learn and develop skills through head and senior instructors, while keeping an open mind.
Assessment: Evaluate student performance, track progress, and prepare them for belt exams and/or competitions.
Class Management: Assist or coordinate trial sign-ups. Keeping Head Instructor informed of all class activities, injuries etc.
Promotion: Assist with promoting the school (student referrals), events, and community outreach.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Communications: Being able to communicate effectively with students, other instructors and parents, while maintaining a positive atmosphere in the dojo.
Experience: Demonstrated proficiency and experience in a specific martial art (mixed martial arts, jujutsu, Aiki jujutsu), history, and theory.
Certifications: First Aid/CPR and relevant martial arts certification.
Personal Attributes: Patience, strong communication, leadership, motivational skills, and a passion for teaching.
Adaptability: Ability to tailor instruction for different ages, skill levels, and learning styles.
Work Schedule & Hours: - Three to five hours per week (being available either on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday evenings).
Hourly rate: $20-$25 based on experience/certification.
Interview Process
If you are selected for an interview, as part of the interview process, you will need to plan and teach one Junior Samurai (kids) class and one Onna-Musha/Samurai (youth/adult) class.
