A Great Canadian Cedar Canvas Canoe
A brand new, hand-built 16’ white-cedar rib & plank canvas-covered ‘Prospector’ canoe.
This is a ‘Fort’ model in the Prospector family, beautifully hand-crafted by Ron Frenette
/ Canadian Canoes in 2010, and is based on the design of an original Chestnut Canoe
Company mold.
Handsome, graceful and rugged, the canoe was completed with white ash outer & inner
gunwales and yoke; seats are handwoven cane on bird’s-eye maple frames, and the
decks and lift handles are walnut. The hull was finished with 3-coats of varnish and then
covered with an epoxy-sealed (for added resilience) canvas skin, and paint. The beam
is 36”, and there are bow and stern brass bang-plates, and a 2cm high keel. It weighs
approx. 70lb., but feels lighter!
It has only been gently and lovingly paddled once for 2 km to test its overall worthiness.
