St. Martin’s United Church and Grace Westminster United Church are vibrant, active congregations that make full use of their buildings and grounds while also providing space for community groups and long‑term tenants. Because these two properties are located close to one another in Saskatoon, we are seeking a full‑time caretaker to support the needs of both churches.

This permanent, Monday‑to‑Friday position (40 hours per week) is an important part of each church’s ministry of hospitality. The caretaker works as part of a team in both locations and plays a key role in ensuring that the buildings and grounds are clean, safe, functional, and welcoming.

The position offers a competitive salary, pension and health benefits, and a monthly cellphone and travel allowance..

Key Responsibilities

Ensure that all areas of each church including the sanctuary, offices, washrooms, and lounge are clean, and presentable at all times. Regularly vacuum, mop, dust, polish, sweep, empty trash and recycle.
Carry out routine inspections of each church building and grounds to identify maintenance or repair needs. Perform basic repairs such as changing lightbulbs and touch up painting. Arrange for more extensive repairs or specialized maintenance with approved contractors as necessary.
Maintain the church’s external environment, including lawns, pathways, parking lots, accessibility pad, and signage. Tasks will include mowing, pruning, weeding, raking, some snow removal, removing litter, ensuring walkways are safe and accessible and keeping catch basins clear of ice and debris in all seasons. The caretaker will maintain relations with contractors that are used to clear snow from parking lots and contract areas and perform grading when required.
Ensure all doors and windows are secure. Assist in monitor security systems, reporting incidents or suspicious activities.
Set up and take down chairs, tables, sound equipment, and other materials required for services, weddings, funerals, meetings, and community events. Ensure heating, lighting, and ventilation are adjusted and functioning as required for scheduled activities.
Ensure regular safety checks, including fire alarm and extinguisher inspections, emergency exit accessibility, and removal of potential hazards. Maintain clear, up-to-date health and safety records in accordance with legal requirements and church policies.
Monitor and replenish cleaning materials, maintenance supplies, and other consumables. Maintain organized storage areas and keep accurate inventories of church property and equipment.
Support ministers, staff, volunteers, and visiting speakers or musicians as needed.
Help coordinate deliveries, oversee contractors, and provide guidance regarding use of facilities.
Report regularly to the office administrator, staff team and Board on the status of the buildings and grounds.
Be flexible and willing to shift priorities and take on additional tasks as required by the church leadership, particularly during busy seasons or special community initiatives.
Skills and Qualifications

3-5 years of experience in facilities care, maintenance, custodial work, or related hands on roles preferred. Familiarity with small repairs, cleaning, and basic groundskeeping are essential skills.
Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems is advantageous. Ability to use common hand tools safely.
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
Must be able to work independently
Strong recordkeeping, communication skills and attention to detail are required.
This role is physically demanding and requires regular manual work such as lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in all types of weather. A high level of physical fitness, endurance, and agility is essential for success in this position.
Professional, courteous, and approachable demeanor capable of working harmoniously with a team of ministers, as well as congregation members, volunteers, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
As a representative of the church, the caretaker must exhibit integrity, confidentiality, and reliability at all times.
A respect for the spiritual environment and a respectful understanding of the church’s role in the community is fundamental.
Good organizational and communication skills are essential
Previous experience in similar work is preferred.
Working Conditions

Work typically takes place on weekdays with flexibility required for early for afternoon work required for events.
Work is both indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to cleaning products, dust, and varied weather conditions.
Reports to the office administrator, staff team colleagues, property committee, and ministry & personnel committee.
Collaborates with staff, volunteers, and community members, while often working independently on day-to-day tasks.

Lets other know what has been done and why to minimize confusion and duplication. Able to provide helpful direction to others when required including staff, tenants, visitors and volunteers.
