ACADIE - ESQUISSES D'UN PARCOURS by Cecile Chevrier - 1994 SC
Description
Sketches of a Journey
Published by La Societe Nationale de L’Acadie. 1994 Softcover. Bilingual format. Book Condition: Used Good, with some minor edge wear. Numerous illus. (many in colour). (11” X 10.25”) 92 pages.
1/2 French, 1/2 English. In September, 1755, the first shock wave of the Acadian Deportation sweeps the shores of Nova Scotia. Half the Acadian population, of French origin, settled there 150 years earlier, is brutally shipped out to British colonies in North America. Several thousand more are deported to England and France. Those who escape are condemned to live the lives of hunted fugitives. Their active persecution ends with the Seven Years' War in 1763 and peace returns to an Acadia devastated by looting and fire. It is impossible to trace with any precision the tangled web of this people's journey through these dark years. Spread over two continents, their trails cross then separate before converging in space and time toward Louisiana and the Atlantic Coast of North America. Conceived as a series of sketches, this work is a collection of documents, maps, portraits and drawings that recall some of the events, and retrieve some of the texture and emotions of the times. More like an album or a journal, it illustrates the unfinished history of Acadia. Extensively illustrated. Contents The Origins, Early Acadia, The Deportation, and Beginning Anew.
ISBN: 298042160X
Asking $25.00.
