English Literature and Essay Writing Tutor for Grades 9-12 and First Year University

My name is Sarah Carruthers, and I am a PhD Student in English at the University of Toronto. I have four years of experience as a Teaching Assistant at the university level, including Shakespeare, first-year English literature, and writing courses. I have experience marking essays and leading tutorials for university courses. I hold an MA in English from the University of Toronto and a BA (Hons) in English from Dalhousie University. My PhD research is focused on medieval literature.

I offer the following services:
• Support with literary analysis and close reading, including poetry, drama, and novels
• Guidance with essay writing, including outlining, thesis statements, integrating evidence, structure, paragraphs, and revision
• Help with MLA citation style and research skills
• Assistance with understanding Shakespeare and the language of the Bard’s plays
• Supplemental and study materials
• Enrichment to students who are not challenged with their current high school coursework

My rates are $40 per hour for an individual session. I offer a free email or 15-minute phone consultation to new clients. I hold tutoring sessions online on Zoom.

I screenshare on Zoom and make use of Google Docs and an iPad/Apple Pencil, as needed. I provide students with any materials generated during the session. I am available most afternoons and evenings, including on the weekend.
