Scientific Name: Chelus fimbriata
Origin: Amazon & Orinoco river basins (captive bred in Canada)
Adult Size: Up to 16–18 inches shell length
Lifespan: 40 years with proper care
Temperament: Solitary, slow-moving, peaceful
With its striking leaf-like appearance, cryptic camouflage, and bizarre yet beautiful flat head and skin flaps, the Mata Mata is one of the most distinctive reptiles on Earth. This “living fossil” is truly a showpiece animal.

Basic Care Instructions

Habitat:Tank Size: Minimum 100–150 gallons for adults
Water Depth: 12–18 inches, low current, still water preferred
Filtration: Strong biological filtration, low-flow preferred
Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
Décor: Driftwood, leaf litter, shaded areas
Water Parameters:

Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)
pH: 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic)
Water Quality: Soft, clean, dechlorinated water is a must
Diet:

Carnivorous ambush predator – feeds primarily on live fish only
Will accept silversides, earthworms, shrimp, and occasional turtle-safe pellets
Feeding 2–3 times a week for adults
Lighting & Heating:
UVB not strictly necessary, but can be beneficial
Maintain water temperature with an aquarium heater
