This monumental porcelain tray would have been decorated over a period of years and was created by Naruse Seishi, the great Master Artisan Japanese Potter/Porcelain Decorator, who at the Chicago Columbian World's Exposition of 1893 became the only Grand Prize (Bronze Medallion-no gold or silver that year) winner in the history of Crafts Competition to be awarded the greatest award in Exposition World Competition History with his exhibition entry being virtually demolished. That year it was Exhibit # 561-an "ORNAMENT" by Naruse Seishi Gifu, Japan-IT WAS ACTUALLY THE ROOF SECTION OF A MONUMENTAL 1/56 SCALE CERAMIC REPLICA OF THE SAMURAI SHOGUN TOKUGAWA'S SHRINE GATE. LEYESU TOKUGAWA BROUGHT AN END TO WARLORD CONFLICTS ENSURING 250 YEARS OF PEACE IN JAPAN.-YES I have the evidence to prove this fact.
At the age of 69 I hopped into my little Nissan CUBE and drove from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Toronto, Ontario to have what I thought was the finest auction house for Asian Art and Antiques in Canada, namely AH Wilkens. In their blog they mentioned Photography and Research as essentially a point of pride with their company, so I was excited about the prospects of selling such a 'stand alone' masterpiece with their firm. My rationale for posting this advertisement at this time is that it is long past the point of setting the record straight, so this is my intent.
When I first met the Senior Specialist at the time, Susan, I mentioned that my intention was to break the current auction record for Satsuma ceramics (a little over $US 200,000.00 dollars) believing that their research would be thorough and comprehensive and expecting 'top drawer' photography from a professional.
When I received my copy of the AH Wilkens August 31, 2021 Auction Catalog, the facts that this incredible tray was firstly created in a "PHOTOGRAPHIC" "3D" Format, but much more essential to an anticipated GREAT auction result was the fact that this magnificent tray was created using massive amounts of pure 24k smelted gold-NEITHER OF THESE MAJOR AND CRITICAL FACTS WERE INCLUDED WITH THE DESCRIPTION, and YES I have a copy of a letter sent to the Harvard Fine Arts Library from the Japanese Curator's Museum that houses the Naruse Seishi collection to show this is factual. Please enjoy my Amateur '3D' photos and also a photo that shows burn marks in the porcelain from a tiny spill of smelted GOLD...this was the only Satsuma ceramic to have ever been created in this manner, and this is little doubt that this 'Tour de Force' porcelain tray, could have replaced the "ORNAMENT' and have been awarded the 'Grand Prize' in 1893 Chicago.
