WANTED: Part-Time (Sundays) Personal Assistant / Continuing Care Worker
Personal Support Worker and Personal Assistant/Companion to a senior lady currently living in an independent retirement residence. Person will ensure client's well-being both in general physical health and in day-to-day social activities, including planning, preparation and assistance as required.
Qualifications
· Understanding of necessary support for elders with deteriorating memory and cognitive function as well as declining physical health.
. A minimum of 2 years experience as a Continuing Care Worker.
· Good problem-solving skills.
· A graduate of a recognized CCA (Continuing Care Assistant) PSW (Personal Support Worker), or LPN (Registered Practical Nurse) program is preferred.
· Post-secondary education is preferred. Education in health, geriatrics and other professions will be considered. Education can be from Canada or other countries.
· Literacy in English (reading, writing, speaking)
· Full vaccination against COVID-19 in Canada
· Three professional references
Responsibilities
Administration
· Prepare calendar - prepare, review, edit.
· Answer/assist with phone.
· Help with the usage of basic technology (television, ipad, kindle).
· Advise family of changes to schedule.
· Keep daily notes for activities, visitors, health changes, etc.
· Assist with keeping papers organized (e.g. newspaper clippings, notes to friends, invitations, incoming mail, outgoing correspondence).
· Report weekly to family.
Housekeeping
· Clean dishes (very light).
· Light cleaning (a cleaning lady visits weekly).
· Wash laundry as required.
· Keep apartment tidy, includes garbage and recycling and compost.
· Help to prepare if hosting visitors.
· Keep apartment temperature comfortable.
· Advise if any repairs are required.
Food / Toiletries
· Discard expired food.
· Ensure sufficient toiletries - Kleenex, disposable underwear, toilet paper, etc.
Health
· Prompt for medications (reminders).
· Ensure prescriptions are delivered.
· Accompany client for outside daily walking (30 min).
· Remind client to drink water throughout day.
· Assure client takes regular meals.
· Assist with daily self-care tasks such as showering, dressing, and maintaining hygiene.
· Hearing aid maintenance, including cleaning, filter change and changing.
· Accompany her to medical appointments as required and take notes.
Financial
· Keep receipts from purchases.
· Total and report on monthly expenses.
· Ensure that any bills and receipt documents received by mail are stored away.
· Consult family before any large, necessary purchases.
Social
· Assist with any advance and day-of planning for client to attend various social activities in the retirement residence and, occasionally, in the community.
· Proactively help him find activities to do/attend that are of interest to her.
· Occasionally accompany her to special event or on a day trip to visit friends/relatives.
Communication
· Person would be hired and report directly to the son(s) of client.
· Person would take general direction from client, and coordinate with client on a day-to-day basis, taking her personal preferences into account while ensuring that the overall job responsibilities are followed.
· Regular communication to family on client's general health, and special needs or news.
As the needs of clients change over time, there may be other duties as assigned.
Schedule
· Eight hours (9:30-5:30) every Sunday
· Residence is on Baker Drive in Dartmouth.
Wage and Benefits
· $25/hour with increase after successful end of 3-month probation
· Pay stubs and T4 will be provided.
· Vacation time, CPP and EI will be paid - adherence to all labour laws of Nova Scotia.
· Letter of Employment will be provided.
