Bedding Plants: RASPBERRIES!
Rubus subgenus Idaeobatus spp.
Very hardy, and, once established, drought resistant perennials that can be invasive. Thus, here in Edmonton, a lot of people grow them in a waste space, behind the garage, between the house and sidewalk, or similar. Their suckers push forward in all directions, and you want them because the canes are biennial, each cane producing fruit only in year two (yes, at the end of year 2 cut out all the canes that had fruit this year. Those left will fruit next year). Simply dig up suckers that grow in unwanted places.
In 30 years I have never watered nor fertilized mine, but I add organic matter to the beds. Of course, when you get them home and into the ground, water them well, and then maybe a week or two later depending on sun & wind conditions. Mulching with lawn clippings or autumn leaves helps preserve soil moisture, of course.
They do well in mixed/partial shade, but thrive in full sunlight.
Plants range in height from 2' to 4' here in Edmonton and they fruit in mid-summer.
Thanks,
Chris.
