In this scene, Musicians of Amun, from the Tomb of Nakht, we see a flute player, a harpist, and a youth playing the norva—a turtle-shell instrument resembling a banjo. The musicians are veiled and adorned with incense sticks above their heads to perfume their bodies and hair.

Nakht, who lived under the reign of Tuthmoses IV (1401–1391 BCE), was a scribe (an official writer, record keeper) and temple astronomer. Musicians in ancient Egypt held various social ranks, with temple musicians—often women—occupying some of the highest-status roles. The title shemayet, or musician of a specific deity, was a prestigious position.
