2-week-old Barred Rock chicks - purchased June 18 from Agro co-op. Guaranteed female.

Barred Rock hens are the best mothers (they protect their young with great care) and they are excellent egg layers. Price: $5 each, or $9 each if you wish to purchase all the chick starter feed you will need to feed them for the first 2 months. (Chick starter feed also just purchased from Agro coop.) I had to order 12 chicks to get 2 of them for my hen, who was devotedly sitting on unfertilized eggs.

The chicks will begin laying eggs (1 per day in the spring, summer and fall) at 16-20 weeks old -- which means, at the end of September/start of October. In the meantime, you can get to know them and have their help eating earwigs and grasshoppers in your garden!

Their egg shells are light brown in colour. I can provide a box, straw, and water and feed containers.
