This stunning vintage artwork is a 75 year old reproduction of Our Lady of Częstochowa icon. In this unusual 2-dimensional piece the image of Mary holding the baby Jesus is housed behind its original glass, hooks and wire. The ornate frame is a work of art on its own! (images 6 3) The gold accented, triple frame measures 19”H x 15”W. (images 1 - 2). The loose backing was removed (image 5), the glass cleaned and the original backing was firmly reattached. The original icon is dark, sometimes referred to as "black”, due to the accumulation of soot and candle smoke over centuries. (a.k.a. “The Black Madonna”) The icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa has been intimately associated with Poland for the past 600 years. Since 1711, many Polish Catholics making a pilgrimage there every year leaving Warsaw every August 6th for the nine-day, 140-mile trek. Elderly pilgrims recall stealing through the dark countryside at great personal risk during the Nazi occupation. Saint-Pope John Paul II secretly visited as a student pilgrim during WWII. The icon is not just a work of art, but also a symbol of faith. It is known for many miraculous healings and supernatural occurrences that have been attributed to its presence. The Black Madonna stands as a significant religious treasure in Poland and remains a source of inspiration and devotion for countless believers. The feast day of Our Lady of Częstochowa is celebrated each August 26th.
