Renoir's “Two Sisters” (“On the Terrace”) is displayed in a beautiful 26” x 22” frame. The solid wood frame (image 4) has a canvas matting (images 2 – 3) and the artwork is housed behind glass.
It is in very good condition and currently on the livingroom wall. (image 5) It is available to be showcased in a new home or office due to downsizing to a condominium suite. (Many other artworks are offered as well!)
“Two Sisters” is an 1881 oil on canvas painting by Pierre-Auguste Renior. (French, 1841 – 1919) Renoir worked on the painting on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant located on an island in the River Seine. Renoir depicted the radiance of a lovely young woman on a warm and beautiful day. The older girl, wearing the female boater's blue flannel, is posed in the center of the evocative landscape backdrop of Chatou, a suburb of Paris, where the artist spent much of the spring of 1881. She gazes absently beyond her younger companion, who is reaching for a basket containing balls of wool.
Jeanne Darlot (1863 - 1914), a future actress who was 18 years old at the time, was posing as "the elder sister." It is unknown who posed as the "younger sister," but it is stated that the models were not actually related.
Renoir helped pioneer the Impressionist school of painting, along with his chum Claude Monet. Technically, the painting is a tour de force: Renoir juxtaposed solid, almost life-size figures against a landscape. The sewing basket in the left foreground evokes a palette, holding the bright, pure pigments that the artist mixed, diluted, and altered to create the rest of the painting.
In 1881 the painting was bought by the art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel. It was presented for the first time to the public at the 7th Impressionist exhibition in the spring of 1882. In 1925, the painting was sold to Annie Coburn from Chicago for $100,000. After her death in 1932 the painting was bequeathed to the Art Institute of Chicago, where it has remained since 1933.
This beautiful painting is known under two titles: Two Sisters (Les Deux Sœurs) was given to the painting by Renoir, and the title On the Terrace (Sur la terrasse) by its first owner Ruel.
