iKamper On day one we covered the entire fiberglass shell in 3M vinyl wrap then glued rubber shield on the side, front and back of shell with Sikaflex to protect it from flying road gravel and overhanging branches along bush trails -- crucial steps for damage prevention. Our Skycamp 2.0 is in excellent shape inside and out and comes with every option available at the time we purchased it; a transparent rain shield, spare set of iKamper security locks and keys, spare set of rail clamps, a folding canvas shoe bag and a folding canvas storage bag that hangs outside the door. Very streamlined when closed up (a 5 minute job for 1 person), the Skycamp 2.0 offers minimal resistance to headwinds and side winds while on the road and when setup in camp. We successfully withstood three days of Class 3 hurricane winds & torrential rain in a high and exposed camp. Kids love sleeping in the treehouse. Comfortably sleeps 2 adults, with NO crowding.
M-101's have a parking brake, were built light but are tough as nails. We bought ours in excellent condition from Canada's foremost collector of military vehicles. Though M-101s were built without a tail gate, we fixed that by having a 2" thick kevlar NATO-ILTIS tailgate installed for better access. Nicely modified, the M-101 is the best offroad multi-purpose trailer you can buy -- if it's free from rot. We replaced the very short and sloppy Army 'pintle hitch' (very prone to jack-knifing in reverse and trailer sway above 90 kmh) with the industry standard 2" square tube setup that accepts any hitch type. We also installed the Australian ARK Dual Jockey Wheel on the tongue and a gasketed HDPE tongue box for storing propane tanks, tools, chocks, etc. Trailer also has the original heavy duty rubber Army tarp in perfect condition and that keeps trailer contents well protected from dust and water. Also has two screw jacks/mounts on the rear corners to allow easy leveling at base camp. Also has:
* four fabricated mesh step panels
* two new 16" Cooper ATF tires
* one spare rim with original Michelin Army tire
* new bearings and shocks in late 2023
* 'Bearing Buddies' in late 2023 (with a grease gun to lube them)
* one 30 liter MDPE water tank that can be filled or flushed from any faucet with garden hose through external ports.
* 2.5" rectangular steel rack professionally fabricated that allows any Roof Top Tent (RTT) to be mounted at the optimum height above ground for safety, quick setup and access.
We've had at least seven RTTs and some were bad from start to finish. The last two we bought were the best (both hard shell types) mounted on a light and rugged Canadian Army M-101 trailer. Serious overlanding requires a good trailer. A roof-mounted RTT works well for weekend trips but it's impractical at best and dangerous at worst for serious overlanding.
Examples:
1. you must takedown and setup your RTT every time you want to explore an area while a trailer allows you to park your sleeping quarters while you explore.
2. a trailer provides room for packing enough water, fuel, firewood, supplies, tools & spare parts to go far from civilization.
3. RTTs mounted to a vehicle roof (especially fabric types) can make travel down forest and bush trails more hazardous to your RTTs health.
RTTs mounted to a vehicle roof will make a vehicle more top heavy and harder to control on exposed highways where strong crosswinds from storms or big trucks blast into you. Offroad, rollovers are a more distinct possibility on hillsides and cliff trails.
If you decide to 'go long' without a lightweight RTT trailer, you'll regret it sooner than later. $6,700 OBO
