I have owned this Watch for 25 years. The serial number indicates the watch was made in 1966. I had my watch maker disassemble the watch in order for me to weigh the gold content. He also put the watch on his timegapher and reported that the watch is in excellent running condition. The watch is currently running at approximately 12 seconds/day.
This watch was worn very little as evidenced by the fact that the stars above the observatory on the case back have no wear on them. I have seen Omega Constellations where stars have been almost completely worn off due to the soft 18 karat gold rubbing on the wrist.
The hands and crown are original to the watch. The crystal may be too. The crystal has the Omega symbol in the centre. The dial of this watch is made of solid gold. I have looked at the dial of with a 10X jewellers loop. The dial is virtually flawless. The bracelet shows no wear or scratches. The crystal shows no scratches. The clasp shows very minor wisps of “desk ware”. The case back shows a light scratch coming from one of the wrench divots. This could be easily buffed out.
The watch sits quite loose (that's the way I like to wear it) on my 7 inch wrist and has 2 more holes in the clasp for lengthening and 2 more holes for shortening the bracelet.
On the dial, the Omega symbol, the word OMEGA, the hour markers and the star below the word “Constellation” are applied. The date window frame is beautifully beveled. The dial is a work of art.
I have calculated the gold value in this watch as follows:
On April 21 I google searched “price gold per gram Canada”. It was $151.75 per gram. This is for pure gold. Therefore, 18 karat gold has a value of:
151.75 X .75 = $113.81 per gram.
This watch weighs 113.66 grams. So I have calculated the value of gold in my watch at:
113.81 X 113.66 = $12,936.
The crystal of the watch is part of the 113g weight. However, the solid gold dial of the watch was not part of this weight. So add a couple hundred bucks to the previous calculated gold value.
Because of the density of 18 karat gold I can not describe the feeling of handling this watch and the feeling of having it on your wrist. It is amazing.
