A little bit about the Xoloitzcuintle:
The Ancient Mexican Dog. The Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo, is a rare and ancient dog breed from Mexico, dating back to at least 3,500 years ago. The name comes from the Aztec god Xolotl, who was associated with death and lightning, and the word itzcuintli, meaning dog. The Xolo was believed to have healing powers and to guide the souls of the dead to the underworld, Mictlán. They were often sacrificed or buried with their owners. The Xoloitzcuintli is what is known as a primitive breed—basically, a very old breed that retains semi “wild” characteristics. This means they require extensive socialization and training in early puppyhood and throughout their lives to counteract shyness or fear. The Xolo comes in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard, and two varieties: hairless and coated, and also come in various colors. The Xolo is a loyal, intelligent, and playful companion, but also a vigilant and protective watchdog. They need socialization, training, and exercise to thrive. The Xolo is the national dog of Mexico and a symbol of its culture and history. Xoloitzcuintli temperament is happy, loyal and incredibly smart. This affectionate breed loves nothing more than cuddling with you on the couch. The Xolo requires about 30-60 minutes of exercise daily. This can include daily walks, one-on-one playtime, and various games, or obedience training. Owners should provide them with high-quality dog food that's suitable for their size and age. Protein-rich options with meat as the primary ingredient are ideal. The breed is partial to fruits and vegetables, so feel free to liberally add these to your dog's meal. Hairless Xolos are always missing a few teeth. It's completely normal and doesn't cause any issues. If your Xolo is coated, on the other hand, you can expect them to have all 42 teeth. The Xoloitzcuintli can be cautious and reserved with strangers. They take their time getting to know guests and will decide for themselves whether they like them or not. The Xolo does not like to be touched by strangers, either. However, this is not a problem that a little training can't fix. The more you socialize your dog, and the earlier you do it, the better he will do with people and animals he doesn't know as he gets older. Xolos make excellent watchdogs and will let you know if they see something of concern, but they are not nuisance barkers.
