My Phelps single was originally purchased by Dr. George Mann in England. He brought the boat to Canadian when he emigrated in the 1970's. George rowed at Henley as a student while studying at Cambridge. In Canada, he was a long-time member of the Leander Boat Club in Hamilton, Ontario.
I met Dr. Mann through his partner and my mother-in-law, Jill. One of the things we had in common was a passion for rowing. Prior to his passing George asked if I wanted his Phelps single. I told I would be pleased to inherit his boat. I made arrangement to have the boat transported from Burlington, Ontario to my home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the mid-2000's.
Although I am an avid rower, I prefer crew boats. I do proudly row the “Mann of War” a few times each season.
As much as I love George's boat it is time to find a new home for this classic. I am looking for someone with a special interest in vintage rowing shells to row or display this boat. The boat is water worthy but does require minor repairs to the deck frame. I named it the “Mann of War” in George's honour. A little corny I know. The new owner can easily remove the vinyl lettering. The boat does come with a pair of old Concept 2 tulip shaped Macon blades. No boat cover.
The boat continues to be stored indoors. The wooden finish is in good shape as you can see in the images provided. All aspects of the boat are original with the exception of the shoes. I replaced them because George's feet were smaller and I did not fit his shoes.
I am prepared to ship the boat at purchaser's expense anywhere in North America. If possible, my club, the Saskatoon Rowing Club does participate in the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta each August in St. Catherines, Ontario. The boat could potentially be transported on the club trailer for pick up in St. Catherines.
