I have made my own picture frames for 40 years. Recently I was asked to make a shadowbox frame for a canvas painting by a well-known local painter. The process was so enjoyable that I want to continue making these frames for both artists and owners of fine art paintings. Making art look its best is rewarding.
The shadowbox is the same wood that I use for my own work, it has the appearance of barnwood. You can see the frames at gordonhiebert.ca. The wood surround is as deep as needed, with a rabbet for the backing. The backing is 1/8" thick stiff material painted dark. The 'shadow' gap around the painting is 1/2". I install professional D-Hook hangers with plastic-coated copper wire. I will if requested add a rear label describing the artist. Also I can create a front label with the title, using 80lb card stock, with a suitable background tone, not just pure white.
Prices, as far as I can tell, range from a very affordable $50 to $80.
To apply, simply email a phone photo of the painting, along with the depth, width and height. I will email back to you what the painting would look like framed in the shadowbox. Nothing will be done until you approve the design.
