JJ Audobon, a French-American self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist, is considered one of the best bird illustrators of all time. His combined interests in art and ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book titled The Birds of America (1827–1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed.

Audubon's influence on ornithology and natural history was far reaching. Nearly all later ornithological works were inspired by his artistry and high standards. Charles Darwin quoted Audubon three times in On the Origin of Species and also in later works. Despite some errors in field observations, he made a significant contribution to the understanding of bird anatomy and behavior through his field notes. The Birds of America is still considered one of the greatest examples of book art.

Fun fact: the most valuable Cdn House of Parliamentary Library's book is an original copy of the elephant size Audobon's “Birds of America”, worth over $1 million.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition (9.5 / 10). Minor tears along edges of dustcover, which were repaired with cellophane tape on inside surface. Minor dried moisture marks on top exterior (spine?) of pages. Minors scratches on outer dust jacket. Interior in perfect condition.
