JFFarmNursery has a very limited number of bare root Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) for sale. This tree is actually not a cedar at all, but belongs to the Juniper family.
In spite of its many benefits, this hardy native tree is sadly underused in the Ottawa area:
• Resistant to extremes of drought, heat, and cold.
• Tolerant of a wide range of soils — poor dry soil, alkaline soil, and dry rocky outcrops, as well as wet swampy land.
• Tolerant of windy conditions, excellent as windbreaks.
• Salt tolerant, which means it can be used near roads, driveways, and sidewalks.
• A significant source of food and shelter for wildlife. The blue fruits on the female trees are consumed by a wide variety of wildlife, including the Cedar Waxwing songbird, which is named for this tree.
• Extremely long-lived evergreen. Some specimens have been known to live more than 500 years.
• The one drawback is that the Eastern Red Cedar is an alternate host for cedar-apple rust and as such should either be included in fungal spraying regimes or planted a minimum of 500' away from orchards.
Eastern Red Cedar berries are edible and branches can be used for teas:
