The concept of the work below:
The Idea Cycle is a painting dedicated to the process of artmaking at the first stages of planning/concept. The work emerges from personal experiences of difficulties in formulating a subject for paintings, with endless changes to ideas and lack of ideas worth executing. This cycle of generating and eliminating ideas in the artist's mind has a mysterious nature where the artist seeks the worthy idea to break the cycle. By reflecting on this artmaking process, I began to think of the morphing of ideas and the mental experience of an artist hunting an idea as a mechanical collection of forms which impact one another and produce other forms. Inspired by automaton paintings of Surrealism, Cubism, and Dada, I created my own mechanism with processes mimicking the idea cycle experience. The cycle begins with a candle flame representing an initial idea, spark, or energy that the artist has when choosing a painting subject. The flame melts the wax, symbolizing the slow attempts at developing the idea, and the energy which is drained from the artist. After the wax is completely melted, the string -representing tension and frustration- would continue to burn. reflecting the artist's frustration in the idea hunting process. A mysterious wheel form, representing large shifts in generation of ideas, takes in the string and lets out a stream of glass beads which represent a flow of precious thoughts. The stream then leads to a sheet of glass, representing an incomplete thought or a different version of the same subject (same material, different form). The glass is shattered by the candle flame because of sudden change in temperature, or sudden stress which shocks the artist after a long time. The cycle can jump back in the opposite direction at this point, where the flame shatters the glass, the glass produces beads, the beads form into string, and the string supports the candle which starts it all. The doubly function of the cycle reinforces the artist's experience as an odd trap in their own mind. Overall, The Idea Cycle presents the difficulties of forming artwork concepts, and the beautiful variety of emotions, ideas, and experiences that are formed by the process.
