This is a high quality early 20th century gramophone with gorgeous cabinetry and a lovely Garrard double spring motor. It played well a few years ago but now has a broken spring.
It was originally bought in Sheffield, England, and it came to Canada via South Africa; sadly the changes in climate have caused shrinkage and cracking in the top panels.
I took the motor out, cleaned off some of the old grease and found one of the two main springs broken. Other than that is feels very smooth, a nice piece of pre-war British precision technology. I can play records by hand spinning them and the governor holds the speed true.
All in all a very solid project for someone. The spring break is near the inner end and could easily be repaired (if you have the time and tools) by cutting off a few inches and making a new hole – there are YouTube videos to show you how.

Alternatively a new spring costs about $80 with shipping and you would own a very nice machine.
