Mary Schaffer overcoming the limited expectations of women at the turn of the 19th Century in order to follow her dreams, this is her story of the Jasper & Banff expeditions of 1907 & 1908.
Full of daring adventure and romantic depictions of camp life, set against the grand backdrop of Canada's mountain landscapes, the book introduces readers to various characters from the annals of Canadian mountaineering history, as well as details of Native American life in the mountains. Author is credited with being the first non-indigenous woman to see Maligne Lake and many other sites.
Her book, upon publication, was well received and remains a desirable travel narrative into country previously known only to scattered trappers and prospectors. One reviewer of the time commented: ''"this book has an individuality all its own. For twenty years Mrs. Schaffer has been coming to the Canadian mountains and she has got closer to them in every sense of the word than any author, newspaper editor, descriptive writer or the special man ever will if he lives a thousand years."''
