These maple sap spiles are a very inexpensive way to start a great springtime family hobby. These spiles require a 1/4" drill bit. Drill into the maple tree to a depth of 1.5" at a slight upwards angle. Avoid damaging the spile or splitting the tree by using a very light weight hammer. Stop tapping the spile when the tapping sound changes. The small hole drilled into the tree will heal over much faster than the larger traditional spiles.
