This model (W140 S500) is known in it's native Germany, as Sonderklasse (German for "Special Class") , called - "Limousine".

The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since.
The model, that Mercedes Daimler Benz, has essentially over developed - over engineered, to build a vehicle unlike any other, in the history of auto making, regardless of the cost of production !

Rare - Final year of production - 1st month of 1998 (Germany), classified as 1999 model year by North American standards.
This W140 S500 (V140 Long Wheelbase) was over $120,000 in 1999.
Although, many of the S500 models, built post 1999, had a similar price tag, their "build quality" was quite evident.
They were no match to the standard of excellence of the W140.
Many of today's Mercedes-Benz vehicles, although bearing the "Name" and "Emblem", are "outsourced" (built and assembled, outside of Germany) !

From the sheer magnificent and bold classic design, with a base curb weight, weighing in at a massive 4700 lbs, paired with the robust and highly dependable Daimler-Benz M119 E50 (119.970), spark ignition 4 stroke, V8 4973 cm3 (5.0 Litre), producing 315 Horse Power, and 345 ft-lb of torque, to the Michelin tires it sits on, it glides almost effortlessly, requiring very soft and gentle pressure to the pedal to acquire acceleration.
