My name is John Wiskin and I've taught English at Markville Secondary School for well over a decade.

In order to prepare students for the upcoming school year in September, I am offering a 10-week summer course for students to be prepared for English.

After not practicing English over the summer, or worse—having English in the first semester last year—students may have gone over half a year without developing or reinforcing these skills.

The lessons, skills and information you will learn have worked for the thousands of students I have taught over the years at Markville.

With this course will focus on two of the most challenging skills students struggle with:

Essay writing: students often think that good writers are naturally gifted and don't realize that anyone can be a strong writer. They just have to follow a process.
Creating meaning from texts: this may be the most challenging English skill to develop, but with a little background knowledge students can learn to read and understand any text.

My tutoring is personalized to the books students will read in the upcoming year:

I will teach students to understand the texts in ways that teachers expect. This is often hidden and challenging for students to understand.
By reading the book(s) in advance students will be prepared for discussions, assignments, and projects, which equals higher grades.

Video lessons so that you have access to the skills at any time

In case students forget, as they often do, I give them access to videos that explain how to read and write effectively so that, when it comes time for the summatives next semester, students can review and apply these skills

Access to an OCT Certified teacher seven days a week.

My students routinely text me questions and concerns throughout the week, so that they understand the material, even when we can't meet me in person.
With traditional tutoring, students have no way to receive answers to pressing questions that constantly arise throughout the school week.
