This is the nicest ice box we have ever had! The original solid brass ornate hardware is amazing. And both compartments open to the front. Many antique ice boxes have a top compartment that open upward, making it impractical to display things on top. This gorgeous “tiger” oak piece measures approximately 30" wide x 22" deep x 53.5" high.

The antique ice box is a traditional-style refrigerator used in the early 1800s and 1900s. It was a common kitchen appliance that did not rely on any electricity or advanced mechanism. Instead, it only had a dedicated space for ice. There was also a bottom compartment or catch pan at the base of the ice box, to collect the melted ice water. The user has to replenish the melted ice, normally by obtaining new ice from an iceman on a weekly basis.

Old ice boxes hold great value in the present world. They may not be used for food storage purposes any more but they make fabulous antiques that you can display in your home… many of them are repurposed now as liquor cabinets, or just for storage. This one has been restored keeping in mind repurposing it as a liquor cabinet or just a storage cabinet…. there are 3 inside wood shelves that have been added to provide stability when items are added inside for storage or display. The wood shelves are easy to remove if not wanted.

When people kept food inside, they also kept insulated chunks of ice with it. Back in those days, people referred to the ice box as either a refrigerator or a cold closet. It was after the invention of the electric refrigerator that people started using the term ice box only.

This one has been restored professionally and it has a great “presence”… very regal, very historical, and very functional when repurposed.
