As NS is occasionally known to experience dry summers with people scrambling for water, in the back of the house are 2 plastic 1000 litre water tanks with installed hardware for garden hoses with rainwater draining off a new metal roof on back of house porch. Otherwise the dug well in basement has never run dry during past 5 years and water is pure and clean to drink. Perhaps the biggest plus about this house is it is currently insured which means its eligible to get a mortgage. This house was built in the 1880's by a sea captain who used wooden dowels on beams which tightened over the years meaning this house has withstood every hurricane NS could throw at it over the years while newer houses are come and gone. Living in windy conditions mosquitos and black flies are basically non-existent. During a power outage you've got water and heat. Most people would never share the negatives about a property but I am. Parts of the roof (no leaks) have areas where shingles need to be replaced (my handyman is 1/2 the price); with a gov't grant you may wish to repair sections of foundation to straighten out slants, however in the basement you will see everything is bolstered up so if you do nothing you are good. We've got neighbours on both sides (nothing behind), however, one is in a retirement home and is not selling as he hopes to return once his house is wheelchair accessible and the other neighbours come for a weekend maybe 4 times a year.
The final negative might actually be a positive for some looking for safety and privacy. We are situated on Long Island, the whale watching capital of Eastern Canada. There is no police presence or government officials on the island, population 500. A large ferry carrying buses, trucks and cars goes every hour on the hour for free during a 5 min ride. There are 3 post offices, 3 grocery stores including hardware store, 2 fire-halls, medical clinic, and a K-12 school on the island. Check this out, temperature during the winter makes this the most temperate conditions outside of western BC in Canada.
