Now is a good time to move these perennial plants from my garden to yours. All do best in a sunny location.
CANADIAN STIFF NECK GARLIC: $5 gets you 4 plants of home grown Organic Canadian Stiff Neck Garlic, dug from my garden, when you arrive. You can then plant them singly, 6” apart in a sunny spot in your garden now. In summer the plants will produce stalks which will develop a curl called a scape. Cut off this edible scape so the plants can use their energy to produce the large garlic cloves (which you harvest to eat) below the ground. Always leave one garlic plant in the ground over the winter for next year. Garlic multiplies nicely, so you should always have a good supply of plants. A few garlic plants planted here and there in your garden also helps to keep aphids away from your roses and other perennials.
This home grown Canadian garlic is much more flavourful that the imported variety available in grocery stores.
PERENNIAL EGYPTIAN ONIONS (WALKING ONIONS):4 plants for $5, dug from my garden when you arrive. For best results, plant 6” apart in an area that gets 6 or more hours of sun. Can be harvested from April, well into the Fall. Use the tops as green onions and the bottoms as a substitute for shallots. Called Walking Onions as each plant produces a flower stalk amid the leaves. This produces a ball of little onion bulbs, which drop to the ground and grow another clump of onions. The whole plant is edible.
GARLIC CHIVES: $5/clump. These are a perennial onion which you can start using as green onions in April and use until Oct. The beautiful white ball flower makes a long lasting cut flower and can be used for a garnish or eaten in salads. The whole plant is edible. Dug for you after you arrive.
