These 5 hardy, quick growing flowering ground covers are ideal to prevent soil erosion on hillsides. Many other perennials (both native perennials and non native perennials) are also available for $5. See my other ads.
All are perennials (grow back each year).
The cost of each is $5 for a generous clump.
Ground covers help to minimize weed growth, as many weed seeds need light to germinate. Ground covers also decrease watering needs in the garden, as they cover the ground, keeping the soil from drying out as quickly.
The first 2 ground covers are fine for total shade to total sun conditions. The last 3 are best planted in full sun. Some pics from my garden are attached, showing plants when in bloom.
(i)LAMIUM ‘CHOCOLATE SOLDIER':
This fast growing ground cover is perfectly happy in full shade to full sun. Height is approx 5-6” high. Masses of of purplish pink blooms are produced in early summer. If deadheaded, it will bloom again later in the season. It also looks lovely as the trailing plant in containers. It is drought tolerant once established. Its lovely variegated foliage is a nice addition to any garden. Even thrives under maple trees.
(ii) SWEET WOODRUFF: This This lacy, little perennial grows only about 4” tall and is very hardy and fast growing. Its network of shallow roots provides excellent erosion control on slopes. It is fine for sun or shade and looks lovely planted under large leaved plants like hosta. It is covered with vanilla scented white blooms in late spring. It is a native perennial needing minimal maintenance, once established.
(iii) VERONICA ‘MIFFY BRUTE':
This perennial ground cover had pretty blue flowers in early and mid summer and does best in full sun. It grows only 3 or 4 inches tall and forms a lovely green mat of leaves, which retards weed growth and traps moisture.
(iv) SEDUM:
Several varieties of ground hugging, sun loving perennials. Great for rock gardens or borders. Masses of summer blooms cover the leaves. Pink or yellow bloomers. Drought tolerant. Rapid growth.
(v). LAMIASTRUM:
This attractive, fast growing ground cover prefers part shade to full sun. Height is approx 8-10” high. Masses of of yellow blooms are produced in early summer. It also looks lovely as the trailing plant in containers. It is drought tolerant once established. Its lovely variegated foliage is a nice addition to any garden. A very low maintenance perennial.
