Math tutor, Physics tutor, Chem Tutor - M.Sc., Prof Engineer

Description

I'm Phil, a professional engineer with a Master's degree and wide range of teaching experience including full time high school and university tutoring the past 9 years. Tutoring is online (my system is cutting edge and the ultimate in convenience) or in-person. I tutor math, physics and chemistry in both English and French, tailoring my approach for each individual student. And I do more than just teach math and physics - I teach study skills, from beginner to advanced, providing a complete,
complementary course.

-- I adapt to the ability and style of each of my students. Together we solve problems, assignments and questions and I show them the simplest methods with step-by-step recipes for each kind of problem. Every important principle, strategy and effective habit is clearly written out. They will gain confidence by seeing how to apply basic ideas. .

-- We will identify and fix gaps in students math and science knowledge. I'll show them effective habits that can boost marks by an easy 10% or 15% in many cases. I give every student free effective study skills training when they sign up, using my own how-to PDFs and other resources.

-- High School: Math 20, Math 30, Calculus, AP Math, IB Math; Physics 20, Physics 30, AP and IB Physics; Chem 20 and Chem 30.
-- SAIT and University - Calculus, Physics.

-- Rate - Grade 10: $40/hour; Grades 11 and 12: $45/hour; University: $50/hour

-- I have every Alberta final exam that has been released and I have written out the solutions to many of them. I also have hundreds of individual topic exams and solutions, problem sets, lesson notes and digital textbooks where I have added answers to a large percentage of the problems, all of which I share free of cost. I provide complimentary PDF lessons of foundational knowledge to students who need to refresh their knowledge of earlier courses.

-- I wrote the Physics 30 Solution Manual and Grade 11 math workbook for *Rock the Diploma* prep school.

- I have taught engineering classes in Canada and overseas to Engineers and Technologists, for new Canadian citizens entering SAIT and was an Engineering teaching assistant at U of C. I taught classes for a large engineering software company and as an engineering consultant and have published eight original papers based on my research in the Canadian Journal of Petroleum Technology and elsewhere.

-- We use Zoom or in person. For the past 5 years students have really liked my online tutoring, which uses the best hardware and software available. Personally, I think online is superior to in-person tutoring in almost every way. It is a totally different experience from Youtube videos and online lectures. It is active, not passive. We are directly face to face talking to each other from the comfort of home. It is much easier to see my writing, we both have a PDF record of the session, students can have a recording of the session and there is easy scheduling and lack of travel hassles like rush hour, snow and dark. Parents doesn't lose 2 hours of commuting and wait time. Plus, for young women there is no discomfort from going to a stranger's house.

-- I have worked in Canada, Yemen, Russia, and Kazakhstan. My last job was 7 years as reservoir engineering manager of a Canadian overseas oil company (4000 employees) in Kazakhstan. My work added $800 million to the company's value before it was sold to a Chinese state oil company.

- I studied honors math, physics and biology at the University of Toronto then eventually pursued fine woodworking but found there was no living to be made. I returned to school and obtained two engineering degrees.

-- I retired early some years ago to travel and pursue personal interests, especially mathematics and physics.

I never ask for endorsements, but here are some unsolicited comments:

— You might remember my son, Eli, whom you tutored in math and physics. I wanted to let you know that he just finished his first semester at the University of Waterloo in honours mathematical physics and earned a Term Distinction for fall. He has been making really good use of his iPad and the study techniques you showed him, and his love of the subjects shine through whenever he talks\ about his coursework. Thank you for your work with him to get him caught up (when his physics teacher was substandard), and for kicking his butt a little and helping to reignite his passion. You made a difference in his world, and in ours.

-- Still can't believe I found you on OKz.ca. Was feeling so lost before I met you but now I know we can produce so really excited. I went from failing Statics to 89% on my final! Alex B., SAIT student....

-- Phil, you changed my life! Richard G. Mature student studying at SAIT.

-- Just want to thank you for all your help. Brianna's Math 30 exam/quiz marks were in the 70s but you helped her raise them to high 80's and 90's. I wish we met you sooner. You are super effective!!! Thank you so much! Medical researcher on her daughter's results....

-- Phil, I recall that after his first session Eric was so pumped he couldn't stop talkin', all the way home, LOL. Thank you ever so much for all of your help with Eric...Eric just thinks the world of you... and for that we are so thankful. Eric's mum. [ What can I say - he's a great kid ]

-- Phil, you are such a nice person. Thank you for helping me feel confident in math again. Emelia G. U of C calculus student

-- Hey Phil, just wanted to say a big thanks for all your tutoring help for Tyson. When you started with him his course grade was sitting at a 34%, he's now finishing with an 80%! [ We just had 5 weeks, but Tyson had a programmer mentality and picked up very quickly if I pointed out the essence of what he needed to know. Nevertheless, that is exceptional.]
