TECHNICAL JARGON/How it is done:

Transfers are done using commercial grade, properly maintained video playback VTR decks. All transfers go through Blackmagic Design capture devices, not consumer grade USB capture sticks. Time base correction is applied where and when necessary. All SD formats are captured in DV uncompressed format, and sometimes AVI, depending on the format. Tests are done prior to establish the best output. The specs are generally matching the original. Most capture specs for analog and digital SD video are 720x540 at 29.97 frames per second. Some professional SD formats are 24 fps. Once captured, the project is then saved to MP4 file format or whichever format the client prefers. MP4 H264 utilizes approximately 5GB per hour.

All HD formats are captured at 1920x1080, 24 to 60 frames per second and is captured in either MP4 using H.264, AVCHD or MOV. The data bitrate for any HD formats being captured is 60MBps. Usually about 20GB per hour of HD video. Captured project video files are then saved in the most common format known universally as MP4 using H.264 codec or whichever format the client prefers. Typical MP4 file is 8GB per hour of video for space utilized. Some clients choose AVI, MOV aside from MP4 for SD video and for HD video, MOV, MP4, AVCHD or ProRes is typically chosen.

Audio only projects are captured in RAW 32bit stereo 192MHz 3200KBps format then saved as uncompressed FLAC, WAV or AIFF to the closest matching specs of the RAW format. Projects are also saved as compressed MP3 or M4A (48MHz Stereo 320KBps). Such files can also be burned to Audio CD.

High-Resolution photo scans are saved in JPEG or TIFF format, scanned at 1200 dpi minimum to 3600 dpi (3MP to 12MP). Documents typically saved in PDF format and scanned at a minimum 600 dpi.

I repair damaged tapes, and un-finalized/corrupted discs. Typical issues would be a split cassette tape that needs to be rejoined, or a mini-DVD from a DVD camcorder that was un-finalized.
